You may be wondering how you can reduce your electricity bill. The amount of electricity you use is a measure of how much energy your home is using. There are steps you can take to conserve energy and help to decrease that huge electric bill as well as help out the environment, here are a few of our top tips to help you.
One of the biggest users of electricity is air conditioning systems, especially central air conditioners. In some climates it is actually dangerous not having cooling and heating of the home. You do not have to stop using the air conditioning, just follow some simple tricks. For instance, you can install a programmable thermostat. What this does is allows you to program the thermostat to cool or heat the home to a lesser extent when you are not there.
Another option is to change the settings of your thermostat. For instance, in summer set the thermostat to 26oC or higher and in the winter set the thermostat to between 18 to 20 degrees. This can save a surprising amount of energy.
If you need to buy a new appliance, then you should look for an energy efficient one. Newer washing machines and clothes dryers are made to be more efficient. If you can buy the most energy efficient one that is available, then it will save you in the long run. However, if you can’t buy new appliances and your washer and dryer are using a lot of electricity, then you may want to hand wash some clothing and hang clothing outside to dry. Certainly, if you have only one or two items to wash it doesn’t make sense to run the machine. Try to use cold water as much as possible when washing your clothes.
The water heater also uses a lot of energy. You can buy a new energy efficient heater but that may not be an option for you. What you can do with your current heater is lower the thermostat, use less water or even insulate the pipes leaving the heater.
A simple way to save energy is to switch out your light bulbs. Traditional light bulbs use far more energy than the newer bulbs made today. Light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs), halogen incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) can save anywhere from 20% to even up to 80% of energy in some cases. They also often last longer than the traditional bulbs that are used. The refrigerator uses a lot of energy but has to stay on. Make sure that the door seal is still okay and working well and try not to open and close the fridge too many times.
Many families and homes have several electronics from computers, to televisions to DVD and Blu-ray players. These all use electricity, even when they are not actually on and being used. A way you can save energy here is to buy what is known as a smart power strip. These power strips will turn off the power to your devices when they are not used. You can also program it to turn off at a certain time. Using these tips should help you to conserve a great deal of energy in your home.
